Respect is something you earn and not demand. This principle goes along the words of our Lord "It is better to give than to receive". One ought to give respect and not expect to receive it. When we expect respect from others we simply demand it. Demanded respect does not come from the heart and won't last. We are commanded in scripture to respect others not expect it from others.
Do you remember the life of Christ, how He lived in the world? "He went around doing good....". When I read this, I simply see how the Lord didn't expect people to serve Him but He Himself did good to them. As more and more of His people start to do this the respect and love will flow without any hindrances in all His children's life.
